Seemanthini Desai life story
During the Italian Renaissance an ideal was set for human excellence. According to which a person could and should simultaneously excel in multiple domains such as art, science and philosophy. People who lived up to this ideal were called Renaissance women/men. Dr Seemanthini Desai’s life offers a rare and compelling modern reflection of this ideal. What follows is a brief journey through her extraordinary life that proves only we limit ourselves.
A Childhood Amidst Nature
As a daughter of an IFS officer, she and her family always lived on the fringes of the forest regions in Karnataka. The twittering of birds served as her morning alarm, their calls filtering through the dense canopy of trees that surrounded her home. In this natural setting, her mother, a Bharatanatyam dancer, immersed Seemanthini and her siblings in a wide range of creative pursuits, from music lessons to theatrical performances. Since then, dance, music, and drama became an integral part of Seemanthini’s life.
Instilling A dream
Seemanthini’s mother, even while nurturing her daughter's artistic spirit, harboured a parallel vision. She instilled in young Seemanthini an altogether different dream: to become a doctor, a healer of bodies as surely as the arts healed souls. Seemanthini cracked the entrance examination and secured her place in medical college.
While Seemanthini jumped deep into the labyrinthine complexities of anatomy and physiology, her mother's own journey took an unexpected turn. Having mastered the ancient art of Bharatanatyam and raised her kids to adulthood, she enrolled in law school and became a lawyer. She demonstrated that learning has no age limit, a truth her daughter would come to mirror in her later years.
Making A Promise
One evening, while pursuing her PG, Seemanthini returned home after a tiring day. She was shocked to find her mother in tears. When inquired, her mother said that the legal profession was highly noble and asked Seemanthini if she believed medicine was the same. When Seemathini agreed and said, “Law and medicine are both noble pursuits indeed.” Hearing this, Seemanthini’s mother argued that if a profession is classified as "noble", the practitioner has a moral obligation to give back to society. The weight of that question lingered. At that moment, Seemanthini made a solemn promise that would go on to define her life. She said, “I promise I won’t charge my patients a single rupee.”
Fulfilling Her Promise
Seemanthini went to the US to complete her research in HIV and returned in 2001. She worked in both charitable settings and corporate institutions such as Apollo Hospitals. Finally, she chose to merge these contrasting experiences into a single path of service, and, in 2010, she opened her first free, crowdfunded clinic. Operating out of a rented space, she embraced this dream despite financial risks. To this day, she continues to treat thousands of patients without charge, guided by the belief that inner fulfilment is the greatest reward medicine can offer.
Parallel to her charitable work, Seemanthini also built a formidable professional career. In 2012, she founded her own diagnostic enterprise, Dr Desai’s Micro Lab. She currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Dr Desai’s Micro Lab, is the co-founder of EAT 5, and holds the position of Chief Research Officer at Stellence Pharma Sciences.
Rhythm and Rāga
After becoming a doctor, Seemanthini got completely caught up in the demanding medical career. At one point she realised that she had drifted away from her creative self. Responding to this inner call, she began training in Odissi dance. Now, she is an expert Odissi dancer with more than 18 years of experience. Recently, she reached the finals of the Marzi Superstar talent show in the dance category, demonstrating her mastery of classical dance.
Apart from dance, music has been a constant thread throughout Seemanthini’s life. Introduced to Carnatic vocal music and the veena in childhood, she often performed folk and duet songs in her village. At thirty-four, in an effort to reconnect with her artistic roots, she pursued and completed an M.A. in Hindustani vocal music. For Seemanthini, music is an essential source of happiness, one she believes has a healing presence for both herself and her patients.
The Reconstruction Artist
Beyond medicine, dance, and music, Seemanthini is also a pioneer of what she calls “Reconstruct Realism” in painting. Her work involves reconstructing mutilated or damaged ancient sculptures on canvas. Whether restoring broken limbs from Khajuraho or recreating the faded visage of the Black Princess of Ajanta, she beautifully restores art and heritage on her canvas. Her mastery of light and shadow creates such depth that her paintings are often mistaken for physical sculptures.
Final thoughts
Ultimately, this is the story of a woman driven by curiosity, shaped by discipline, and guided by compassion. Dr Seemanthini Desai’s life reminds us that learning never ends, creativity need not fade, and above all, that striving to be a good human being remains the highest pursuit of all.
