Discipline, Justice, and Reinvention: The Life of S.K. Prakash
S.K. Prakash’s life has been a journey across landscapes, challenges, and passions. Born in Kerala and raised amidst constant relocations, he grew up learning adaptability, discipline, and the value of dedication. Over the years, he has embraced every new chapter with courage and curiosity, while nurturing his enduring loves for golf and music. This article traces the remarkable journey of Prakash’s life, a story defined by resilience, exploration, and personal growth.
Early Years Across India
S.K. Prakash was born in Tirur, a vibrant coastal town in Kerala where the air smells of salt and trade. Yet, the sea breeze was soon replaced by the changing landscapes of India. With a father in Civil Aviation, Prakash’s childhood was a whirlwind of relocations. This cross-country odyssey eventually led him to the heart of India, where he completed his college education in Nagpur.
A Brief Banking Stint, Then a Defining Turn
At just 19, Prakash secured a job at a central bank. But destiny had already prepared a different path for him. Within two years of working in a bank, he made a decisive shift. In 1985, he joined the Indian Air Force, a move that altered the trajectory of his life entirely. From that moment, life moved into a higher gear, governed by discipline and responsibility. His early years in the Air Force were spent in administrative roles, where he learned the systems that keep a force operational and effective. His sharp mind and sense of duty soon propelled him into one of the most intellectually demanding and high-stakes arenas of military life: the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Branch.
Bearing the Weight of Justice
Judge Advocate branch is one of the most sensitive and responsibility-laden fields in the Air Force. Here, the margin for error was minimal. Over the years, he presided over more than 100 courts-martial, carefully handling evidence for both prosecution and defence. The cases ranged from internal disciplinary matters to external civil cases that IAF had to deal with. Delivering justice in a military setting requires more than legal knowledge. That is why for Prakash, evidence remained the cornerstone. Every judgment, he believed, had to rest on facts rather than pressure or sentiment.
Thinking Beyond the Rulebook
Some cases required more than legal precision. It required creative problem-solving. In one unprecedented instance, an accused individual attempted to stall proceedings by requesting withdrawal of Provident Fund money to hire a civilian lawyer. Prakash knew it was a deliberate step taken by the accused to delay the judgment. Rather than allowing the trial to collapse into delay, Prakash adjourned the court and escalated the matter to higher authorities. With exceptional approval granted, a first in Air Force history, the trial resumed. This approach reflected his core principle. Law must serve justice, not be used to evade it.
Prakash worked in similar high-pressure situations for nearly 3 decades. Prakash’s professional life reached its peak when became the first IAF officer to undergo the Prestigious Judge Advocates Staff Officers Course with USAF, at Montgomery, Alabama, USA. This course made him an officer familiar with international military laws. Nevertheless, all the time, he anchored himself to lawful command structures and evidence to determine whether indiscipline had truly occurred!
The Great Corporate Transition
Retirement for many is a finish line; for Prakash, it was a new starting block. After retirement from IAF in 2009, he made the bold leap into the corporate world, within the legal department. For a veteran, this transition could have been jarring but Prakash navigated it with grace. . It has now been 17 years since he joined and has successfully managed the corporate world by maintaining a positive outlook and embracing the realities of a new era. Prakash is a qualified Independent Director.
Passions Beyond Profession
Life outside work has always been anchored by two enduring passions for Prakash: golf and music. Prakash is R&A Level Two qualified on Rules of Golf, and the sport remains a vital stress buster. Singing forms the other half of his personal sanctuary. He recently participated in Marzi Superstars in singing category and has ever since been an active Marzi Member.
